A co-worker of mine came upon the 12″ single for “Word To The Wise” by Doctor Ice, then showed me this video for the single. It’s a hot video. I love the New Jack Swing neighborhood party going on, and all the dancers facing-off in the streets. That’s real hip hop.

You may not know the name Doctor Ice, but you probably should, since he came from the group UTFO, who are most known for creating the song “Roxanne Roxanne”, which was a song about a woman named Roxanne who rejects the members of the group. The innocent UTFO song took on a different meaning when a 14 year girl from the Queensbridge Projects named Lolita Shanté Gooden aka Roxanne Shanté got together with producer Marley Marl and radio DJ Mr. Magic and decided to record a response called “Roxanne’s Revenge”. The response was a confrontational song in which Shanté assumed the role of Roxanne, dissing UTFO over their own instrumental, which unintentionally sparked the Roxanne Wars, and inspired tons of songs about a fictional girl named Roxanne.
